Fishing: The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is host to hundreds of Pro and amateur fishing tournaments each year. With over 600 miles of shoreline and 114,000 acres of water surface "Big Sam" still remains one of the healthiest fisheries in the State of Texas. The Corps of Engineers controlled lake became an ideal ecosystem for fish production when the forest area was inundated with water over 30 years ago. Rayburn consists of numerous creek channels, protected coves, moss beds, and brushy shoreline. This combined with the many high quality launch sites around the lake, create the perfect environment for fisherman.
Rayburn is known for its large mouth bass and it is not rare to land a 10 to 13 pound bass. Catfish, crappie and bream are also found in large amounts. During the summer months white bass, stripers and hybrids can be found in the southern open waters.
